In its 53rd meeting on Saturday, the GST Council resolved to implement Aadhaar-based biometric authentication nationwide to prevent fraudulent input tax credit (ITC) claims through fake invoicing, as announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

During a press conference, the Finance Minister disclosed that two pilot projects for biometric authentication had been successfully conducted. Consequently, this facility will be introduced across the country in a phased manner. Aadhaar biometric authentication will become mandatory for all new GST registrations nationwide. "This initiative will significantly aid in combating fraudulent ITC claims made through fake invoices," stated FM Sitharaman.

Moreover, FM Sitharaman announced the establishment of a Group of Ministers (GoM) for the rationalization of GST rates, to be chaired by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. The GoM is expected to submit a status report at the next meeting. While numerous decisions were taken during Saturday’s meeting, some GST issues could not be included in the agenda. These issues will be addressed in the next GST Council meeting, anticipated to take place in mid-August, following the conclusion of the Parliament's Budget Session, she added.
